Honeywell’s next-generation flight management system (NGFMS) is currently undergoing flight testing on the Gulfstream G650 and was tested during the Boeing 747-8 first flight last month. “The NGFMS provides all of the capability to meet requirements for improving air traffic management through decreased separation and more direct routing,” said Honeywell Aerospace vice president of marketing and product management Carl Esposito.
According to Honeywell, the NGFMS will be certified later this year on the Boeing 747-8 and next year on the G650. It will enable required navigation performance (RNP) 0.1 and also supports Waas-LPV, future air navigation system 1 (Fans-1) and Fans-2 requirements.
“The NGFMS is being designed to meet increasing requirements for integrity and availability required by NextGen and Sesar (Single European Sky ATM Research),” said Honeywell vice president of crew interface products Chad Cundiff. “The new architecture will ensure higher quality performance and functionality while allowing faster development of new functionality enhancements.
The NGFMS provides enhanced flight planning, navigation and guidance, and aircraft performance capabilities to the aircraft, as well as a large navigational database. It works both as a standalone product, as it does on the 747-8, or integrated with other avionics, as in the Gulfstream G650.

Der renommierte JEC-Innovationspreis in der Kategorie Luftfahrt geht an Fokker Aerostructures (NL), Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation (USA), KVE Composites Group (NL), TenCate Aerospace Composites (NL) und Ticona GmbH (D). Die Auszeichnung wird für die innovativen Seiten- und Höhenruder aus geschweißten thermoplastischen Composites verliehen, die im Heck des neuen Business-Jets von Gulfstream, der G650, zum Einsatz kommen.
Erstmals werden in der Luftfahrtindustrie geschweißte thermoplastische Primärstrukturbauteile eingesetzt. Das überzeugte auch die international renommierten Experten der JEC-Jury. Sie zeichnen damit auch die erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit zwischen Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation und der Zuliefererkette, bestehend aus Fokker, KVE, TenCate Aerospace Composites und Ticona, aus, die zu dieser wichtigen Innovation in der Luftfahrtindustrie führte.
Fokker Aerostructures konzipierte und entwickelte das Heck der G650 und setzte ein neues Induktionsschweißverfahren für das Höhen- und Seitenruder für die Serienproduktion ein. Mit dem von der KVE Composites Group entwickelten Schweißverfahren werden die Komponenten mittels Induktionsschweißen zu untrennbaren Einheiten zusammengefügt, ohne dass kostspielige Bohr- und Nietarbeiten erforderlich sind.
Der thermoplastische Werkstoff ist Fortron® PPS. Entwickelt wurde der technische Hochleistungskunststoff von Ticona. TenCate Aerospace Composites produziert die verwendeten Kohlefaser-PPS-Halbzeuge und Platten. Komponenten aus PPS-Verbundwerkstoffen bleiben selbst dann hart, schlagfest, steif und dimensionsstabil, wenn sie hohen Temperaturen und aggressiven Medien ausgesetzt sind.
Der zunehmende Einsatz von thermoplastischen Composites in der Luftfahrtindustrie ist ein Trend, der durch die Ziele der Gewichtsreduzierung, einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung und der Recyclingfähigkeit der Werkstoffe vorangetrieben wird. Mit seiner inhärenten Flammwidrigkeit erfüllt das Material darüber hinaus die hohen Sicherheitsstandards des Flugzeugbaus. Bislang wurde eine Kombination aus Duroplasten und herkömmlichem Aluminium für Primär-strukturbauteile eingesetzt.

May 4, 2010 — The Gulfstream G650 flew at its proposed Mmo of 0.925 for the first time on Sunday. The ultra-large-cabin, ultra-long-range flight-test aircraft (S/N 6001) took off from Savannah at 1:38 p.m. with Gulfstream’s Chief Test Pilot John O’Meara and Senior Experimental Test Pilot Tom Horne at the controls.
The aircraft reached its top speed of Mach 0.925 while at 42,500 feet. The business jet returned to Savannah at 3:12 p.m.

The aircraft’s capabilities and state-of-the-art technologies make it very easy to fly and will enhance our customers’ experience with their G650.”
Gulfstream announced the G650 program on March 13, 2008, indicating that the clean-sheet aircraft – Gulfstream’s first since the GII – would be capable of flying Mach 0.925, making it the world’s fastest transport-category aircraft in the sky.
The G650 rolled out under its own power – another Gulfstream first – on Sept. 30, 2009. Its first flight was on Nov. 25, 2009. The second flight-test aircraft – S/N 6002 – followed on Feb. 25. As of mid-April, the two aircraft have completed nearly 50 flights and approximately 140 flight-test hours.
The five G650 aircraft involved in the flight-test program are expected to perform an estimated 1,800 hours of testing. Each aircraft is used for a specific series of tests with S/N 6001 focused on performance and flight controls, S/N 6002 on systems and S/N 6003 on avionics, including communication and navigation. The two production aircraft in the test program – S/N 6004 and S/N 6005 – will be used to evaluate interior systems and be part of the reduced vertical separation minimum (RVSM) testing.

There are a variety of internal organizations and suppliers directly involved in the development of the G650, and their support is instrumental in the success of the program.”
The G650 flight-test program involves five aircraft performing an estimated 1,800 hours of testing. Each aircraft is used for a specific series of tests with S/N 6001 focused on performance and flight controls, S/N 6002 on systems and S/N 6003 on avionics, in-flight load measurement and the ice-protection system. The two production aircraft in the test program – S/N 6004 and S/N 6005 – will be used to evaluate interior systems and be part of the reduced vertical separation minimum (RVSM) testing. The testing explores the accuracy of the aircraft’s altimeter system, which is used to support the aircraft’s operation in controlled airspace with reduced vertical separation.

SAVANNAH, Ga., June 21, 2010 — A fourth aircraft is now part of the Gulfstream G650 flight-test program, Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. announced today. The newest ultra-large-cabin, ultra-long-range test aircraft flew for the first time June 6 and has spent more than five hours in the air.
Unlike its three predecessors, the fourth G650 (S/N 6004) is a production aircraft. S/N 6004 will be the first G650 outfitted and tested with a full interior, which will be installed later this summer. The aircraft, which will be used to evaluate the aircraft’s cabin systems, is expected to resume flight testing following the installation.
“We’re delighted with the performance we’re seeing out of these aircraft,” said Pres Henne, senior vice president of Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “We’re equally thrilled with the streamlined manufacturing process, which involves 50 percent fewer parts, bonded materials and precision build carts, which allow us to easily put aircraft pieces together. Our use of these advanced materials and systems – along with the three-dimensional solid models we utilized in the design process – have provided impressive results. We couldn’t be more pleased.”
The G650 flight-test program involves an estimated 1,800 hours of flight and a specific purpose for each of five aircraft. S/N 6001 is focused on envelope expansion, air data calibration, flutter, in-flight performance and flight controls. S/N 6002 is used to evaluate the aircraft’s systems, while S/N 6003 tests the avionics, in-flight load measurement and ice protection system. S/N 6005, which has been turned over to the Flight Test department for outfitting, will participate in the reduced vertical separation minimum testing.
The G650 flight-test program officially began on Nov. 25, 2009. Through June 20, the four aircraft currently in the program have completed more than 85 flights and 240 flight-test hours.
Ultimate load testing of the aircraft’s primary structural components has also begun. In April, the aircraft completed the structural limit load testing required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The limit load represents the maximum load the aircraft should experience during its life cycle. Ultimate load is 50 percent more than limit load. Ultimate load testing will be performed on the fuselage, wing, vertical and horizontal stabilizers, nose landing gear and all control surfaces.
The G650 has also flown at its maximum takeoff weight of 99,600 pounds (45,177 kg) and recently reached its maximum operational Mach number of Mach 0.925 at 42,500 feet (12,954 m).

Gulfstream G650 Nears Speed of Sound
Gulfstream’s new G650 has exceeded .99 Mach during certification flight testing, the company said today, helping pave the way to its goal of being the world’s fastest civilian aircraft.
There are four G650s involved in flight trials now, with a fifth to join the test fleet soon. One of those “exceeded point 99 Mach by a fraction” during scheduled tests last week, company spokesman Jeff Miller told Aviation Week this morning. A formal press release on the milestone event is expected to be issued soon.
“We are very pleased with the way the aircraft are performing,” Miller said.
FAA requires that aircraft demonstrate the capability to fly .07 Mach above the target Maximum Mach Operating speed (MMO). The G650’s planned MMO is .925 Mach, the highest of any aircraft. The Cessna Citation X has held the distinction of being the world’s speediest civil aircraft since the retirement of the Concorde; Cessna jet currently has a .920 Mach MMO.
